It is only fitting to wrap up my Top Ten Tips for Yard Sale Shopping with this tip… Be open-minded and Have FUN!! It’s what I do best! And while it may be tempting to buy every funky junky piece you set your eyes on, there is a time to buy and a time not to buy!
The best part of shopping yard sales is finding that quirky piece ‘o junk that no one else knows what to do with! It’s what I live for!! Finding potential in something where no one else sees it is the key to snagging an amazing deal!! Can I really get a chandalier for $5?? Sure, if you make it out of an old trash can and some silverware!!
With all the ideas swimming around on Pinterest, even the not-so-creative-DIYers are sparked with an interest in creating something beautiful from old junk! That’s why old doors and old windows are so popular now. But you have to look beyond all the cool-right-now projects on Pinterest and really look at each piece with an open-mind, a creative eye, try to find a truly unique way to create something from nothing!
When to Buy It
The absolute best time to buy is when you see something funky that is broken or doesn’t serve its normal function. If you have an idea in your mind of something you can make with it, you are likely to score a deal!! Others may not see that same potential! This day and time, everyone knows how to paint an ugly dresser. You have to think beyond that! Waaaay beyond that! You will be competing with other junk lovers who have the same ideas you do! They’ve seen those same pins on Pinterest. You have to be different and think outside of the box! Then, work your negotiating magic and you’re in business!!
When to Leave It
ALthough you may have a great idea for your newly found treasure, you don’t want to spend $50 on that antique couch if it’s gonna cost you $300 to fix it and reupholster it! Time is valuable. Factor that into your cost to repair or recreate it! You don’t want to buy it, if you will spend more on it than what it’s worth. The other fail (and I do this all the time!) is to buy something just because it is cheap! While it is nice to have a heap of junk that you can pull from when your creative juices start to flow, you don’t want to have a garage full of mix-matched junk with no plan for any of it! There are certain things I will always buy, even if I don’t have a plan, like old hardware, knobs, keys, you know… small stuff. But I’m not going to buy something HUGE unless I have a plan for it!!
I am a believer that we are all creators! So, open your mind to new ideas. See the yard sale through innovative eyes! You’ll be surprised what you may just walk away with!! Truly living the motto that Beauty Stems from Rusted Roots!
