Junkin’ in Atlanta & My Dumpster Diving Treasure

It all started with a chicken nugget happy meal from McDonalds!! It was a balmy Thursday mornin’, hanging with my buds at the blog conference in Atlanta. Lucky for us, Scott Antique Markets was having a show while we were in town! So you know where our Rusted Route took us…. straight for the show! Little did we know there would be dumpster diving involved… kinda!!

(Please excuse me as I snag this drive-by photo! I’m getting quite good at it! Ha ha!)

Scott's Antique Market in Atlanta, GA

On our way to the BIG show… I was starving!! I guess the excitement overwhelmed me to the point of skipping breakfast and this girl was hongry! Yes, hOngry!! The ever-so-generous Brittany offered to make a pit-stop so I could grab an Egg McMuffin… yummo!! Despite my complete hankerin’ for this yummy muffin ‘o goodness, melty cheese, and fluffy egg… we drove off with some chicken nuggets and french fries. It was 11:30! Who knew!?!

Just as I dipped my last nugget… there it was… the pearly gates… I mean not really. But beautiful old doors as far as the eye could see! We had arrived!

I could hardly stand it. Brittany. Brittany. Hurry and park the car! I gotta get out!! I was so excited!! I gathered up my happy meal box and the rest of my trash and hopped out of the car!! I made a beeline for the trash can so I would have empty hands for all the pickin’ I was about to do!! And that was when the magic happened… I pulled back the trash bag to drop my trash in and what did I see?? TONS of wooden beads!!! All colors!! All shapes!! All sizes!!

I wanted to just dive right in… but I didn’t know these gals all that well and I felt like I needed a partner in crime! I whispered for Brittany to come take a look. She took one peek and said, grab the grocery bags… we are loading these bad boys up! SCORE!!

We carefully pulled the few pieces of trash out and loaded up some bags!! It quickly became all the rage… others wanting to jump in! But between, myself, Brittany and our other buds Jen and Sandra. We weren’t makin’ room for any other pickers! Sorry peeps, the early happy meal tosser gets the worm! (or the beads!) Brittany snapped this pic just as we were realizing what we had found… my eyes say it all!!

Junk Adventure on Instagram

More proof that you should hop over and follow along on Instagram!! All the cool peeps are doing it!! And that’s where I post my real time junk adventures and finds!! Sandra jumped in and it wasn’t long before we had bags full of fun beads!! I mean, who throws this stuff away??

How to Find Free Antiques

We saw the same beads inside for 10 bucks a strand! So we quickly gathered our finds and unloaded in the van!! Then headed back in for more treasure!! I’ll give you a peak at some of the other goodies we found… and share more next Friday too!! There’s just too much eye-candy for one post!!

Old Antique Picture Frames

As a rust lover… I just couldn’t get enough of all of the rusty letters!! Just like the beads, there were small ones…

Old Rusty Letters and Arrow Lights

And GI-normous ones… like seriously!! I should have stood beside these as a point of reference. They were at least six feet tall!!

Giant Rusty Metal Letters

And one more of my favorites before I let you go… this AWESOME table-top fan made from an old radiator fan! How cool is that, right??

So many amazing artists and curators all in one place!!

So, to my dumpster diving (scratch that) trash can diggin’ gal pals who dug with me ’til we hit pepsi-soaked paper towels… rock out ladies!! It may not be Mardis Gras!! But, we did it!! And we’ve got the beads to prove it!!

  1. What a score! I have totally dumpster dived before and its worth. This makes me think of a few sayings Ones persons trash is another persons treasure or My Grandma had that, My Mom threw it out and I picked it!

    • Candace says:

Oooooh, I like that one, Michelle!! “My Grandma had that, my mom threw it out, and I picked it!” Although, my mom is starting to see junk through my eyes!! Ha ha!! Even if she can’t figure out what to do with it, she will hang onto it and give it to me! Ha ha!! It’s a fun little cycle we have going!! 🙂

  2. Whaaaat!!? Who DOES throw stuff like that away? Great finds!! I would have dug in too!!!

  4. After hearing the story about the garbage can full of beads, it’s even better now to see photographic evidence. Seriously, my jaw dropped to see those gems! Cannot WAIT to see what you end up doing with them….

    • Candace says:

They are gems indeed, Lauren!! I couldn’t believe it!! I’ll take these wooden beads over diamonds and pearls any day! Okay… maybe if the diamonds and pearls were free I’d cave! Ha ha!! So glad I got to spend my weekend with you, friend!! Love ya to pieces!! 🙂
