Sometimes you just need a breath of fresh air, an escape from the busy lives we lead… car horns blaring, cell phones beeping, run here, run there. Sloooooow down! Today, we’re gonna journey the Rusted Routes of Amish Country. I invite you to grab a warm soft pretzel and an ice cold root beer… let’s take a moment to enjoy the beauty of simple living.
I can’t think of a better way to experience such a beautiful land, than a horse drawn carriage. Feel the breeze through your hair? It’s such a cool morning… so refreshing. Let’s really take it in. Clear your mind. No worries. No to-do lists. Just us… the horse… and the serene landscape.
Sweet babies greet us as we slowly pass by. A sign of new beginnings. The innocence of youth. Don’t we all wish we could go back to a time of no responsibilities? No stress? A time when someone else carried us around… gave us food when we were hungry… and laid us softly to bed as our eyes got heavy.
The truth is, life is hard. No one ever said it would be easy. But it will be worth it! It’s time we find the beauty that lies in the everyday of normal life. No one likes the never-ending laundry that piles up day after day. But as we trot through this beautiful land, the laundry of a simpler day is like art. The vibrant colors grace the sky like a rainbow colored pendant. We should think of our dirty laundry the same way!
Each colored flag representing a days hard work, a child’s day of play, a Sunday morning at church. Each and every article of clothing creating this clotheline of life. And without the hard work, the pendant wouldn’t be near as colorful. Right?
And all the tiny clothes mean the laughter of small children grace this home. The pitter patter of small feet on a hardwood floor. Little children learning that life isn’t about the latest iPhone or candy crush, but instead that family is number one. Love is at the center of the home. And hard work leads to success and a life fulfilled.
These families are up with the sun and work hard on their farms. The fellas milking cows and teaching their sons, while the ladies are baking and sewing. As a family, they work together to create a life abundant. It’s such a peaceful scene.
The families open their farms to those who would like to visit, selling wares they no longer use or goods the ladies have made. Pies. Cakes. Quilts and more. But always keeping Sunday a day for family and worship, bringing it back to what’s really important in life.
As the clip-clop begins to slow, we know that we’re nearing the end of this beautiful ride through the country side. But there is oh-so-much we can take away from this journey. Take a moment to step away from the hum of every day life. Put the phone down. Look around you and take a deep breath. Remember what this life is all about.. and challenge yourself to live simple.
Break through the barriers that are holding you back. Peak your head through the fence and reach for what it is that you want… be it happiness, peace, calm, or joy. Find it! Create it! Live it!
