What I Gained from Taking a Month Off

I did it!! I took an entire month off!! 31 days to regroup, refresh, and rebuild parts of my life that had been put on the back burner for far too long!! And I am here to tell you I am walking away from that month off with more in the bank that I had when I started on January 1st!!! Wanna know how?? I’m here to share…

What’s the most important thing in your life? Your family? Your faith? Your job? Your home? Your health? Your money? What is it?? Whatever it is, isn’t that the ‘bank’ that you want overflowing??? You following me here? I’m not saying I walked away from 31 days off with an abundance of cash flow. In fact, it’s quite the opposite! It’s tough taking an entire month off when you’re a small business owner. No sales means no cash! But you still gotta pay rent, power, internet, etc. The expenses of the business keep coming but for a business that brought in nada!! Now don’t get me wrong, we have other revenue streams for our business that help balance the financial strain and an OUTRAGEOUS November and December at the shop helped prepare us for the month off as well. But not everyone is so fortunate!

With that being said, our ‘money bank’ isn’t what’s most important to us! It took 31 days off to prioritize our ‘banks’ and make sure we are making conscious deposits into the ‘banks’ that matter most. For us, our faith, family, health and home are at the top of our priority list. That doesn’t mean that our jobs, our money, and many other things aren’t on the list. They are!! But these are at the top (right now) and are the ‘banks’ we should be making our biggest deposits!

Small Page DividerYou see, here’s the thing. Our life banks work just like our money bank. If you don’t make deposits into your money bank, you won’t be able to make any withdrawals down the road. Sooner or later, your money bank will run dry and there will be nothing left! It works EXACTLY the same with our life banks.

Let’s take our family bank for instance… we have to make conscious deposits into the relationships that we have with our spouses, our children, our parents, and so on. Without those consistent deposits, eventually relationships run dry. You can’t expect those people to stick around, if you don’t put forth an effort to make those deposits. And they don’t have to be big deposits. Maybe it’s a quick phone call, a text, or if you wanna go real old school pop a card or letter in the mail!! I love getting something other than bills in the mailbox!! Maybe it’s cooking your spouses favorite meal or a note in your child’s school lunch. But if you are constantly hustling about making deposits into a million different ‘banks’ or better yet spending your time making deposits into the ‘banks’ that are not at the top of your list, you may not have time for deposits in the ‘banks’ that really matter!!

Another example?? Sure! Let’s take our faith bank… I won’t dive too deep into this because it can be a touchy subject for some. But those who know me know that I am a woman of faith. Do I go to church on Sundays? No. Should I? Yes. But I believe… Matthew 18:20 “For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.” Fellowship with likeminded believers is important for growth in any faith, but for me, that doesn’t have to happen at church. I recall a chilly evening last October when some friends invited us over for a chili supper. We gathered around a bonfire, snuggled in our scarves under the stars. A dear friend walked out with his guitar and harmonica and started playing what the Lord laid on his heart. It was beautiful. We sat around the fire and sang Amazing Grace and other old hymns. To me, that’s church. And it’s deposits like that into our faith bank that personally make my relationship with God rich.

I could go on and on about making deposits into our life banks and perhaps I will in another post. I say all of this because I know that the struggle is real for so many of us!! I am there. I am with you! Life can be hard, so many balls in the air. But know that you are not alone! I was overwhelmed by all of the messages that I received after I shared the struggle I was faced with…

“Hit me in the heart! I’m a fulltime teacher and have started a little vintage business. The struggle IS real. Something is always getting left behind. Thanks for posting and sharing.”

“I totally understand. When I retired and decided to go full time into the antiques business I knew it would be a full time plus effort. I laugh when someone asks me if I am a part-time dealer. There is no such thing if you are going to be successful. This past year I too felt overwhelmed and torn. I decided to take a break and play.

“You are so right…and it means more coming from someone like you. I often feel guilty because I am not working as much or as hard as you have. Perhaps it’s the balance that is tugging at me. I’m stepping back this year, delegating as much as I can and trying to concentrate on the creative side of the business. That is the part I love an they part that has taken a back burner.”

Oh, Sharon, I feel your pain! Which is why we HAD to take some time off to prioritize! Good job, Miss Linda!! And Carol… sweet Carol… don’t you think for a second that I am any different from you!! And don’t ever feel guilty for not working as hard as me or any one else for that matter. Everyone works at a pace that is best for them and what they have going on in their lives! Right now, the hubs and I don’t have children, and Rusted Roots is my full time gig! So I can afford to hit the pavement hard, day in and day out. But rest assured a day will come when our season of life will require a slower pace and more focus on other aspects of our lives! It all goes back to exactly what you said, BALANCE! And that will be different for everyone!!

So, as we wrap up this ‘I’m-back-after-a-month-off-and-have-a-lot-to-say’ post, I leave you with this… What’s the most important thing in your life? Your family? Your faith? Your job? Your home? Your health? Your money? What is it?? Whatever it is, isn’t that the ‘bank’ that you want overflowing??? Take time to figure it out! If that’s ten minutes a day or 31 days straight. Just take time. Take time to figure out what’s at the top of YOUR list and which ‘banks’ you’ve neglected that may be running a little dry. For us, the last two years have been about building, building, building Rusted Roots and that we did! But at the expense of letting our other life accounts run a little dry!! It took 31 days to figure out how to prioritize and I feel like the bank analogy does it best! No doubt, we have a lot of learning to do and this balance thing won’t be easy! Believe me!! But in the words of one of our loyal followers…

  1. You know about 2 weeks ago I was thinking, I haven’t seen or heard anything from Candice in a LONG while! I knew you guys said you were going to take some time off at the New Year when I saw you in December but a whole month! Wow! What an inspiration and great advice to just “Be Still!”
I’m excited to see what a new, re-energized Rusted Roots has in store! Continued blessing in 2016!!

    • Yes, Maria!!! Sometimes we have to step back and make those intentional decisions to ‘rest’! Right?!!! Because we LOVE this business so much, it can often be all consuming! Taking some ‘slow down’ time opened our minds to new ideas and plans for Rusted Roots in 2016 and we couldn’t be more excited!! Have a wonderful rest of the week and we hope to see you in our neck of the woods again in 2016!! 🙂

  2. Cheryl Frederick says:

    Thanks for the inspiration……awesome post!!
I have been in remission for 2 1/2 years from malignant melanoma. They tell me in 2 1/2 more years I can say I am Cancer free…….so I concentrate on the health bank along with the faith bank.
I still have coming to one of your sales on my bucket list and hopefully that will happen this year!

    • Thank YOU, Cheryl! And congratulations on 2 1/2 years of remission. That’s HUGE!! You’re halfway there!! You can do it!! I love that you have taken the time to evaluate your ‘life banks’ and focus on what’s most important! You will be better for it! I wish you all the best in your fight!! You got this!! You don’t need me to tell you that! You know it!! XOXOXO Keep in touch!! 🙂

  3. Love this post, Candace and I’m so glad you took the time to take care of your banks. The head of my real estate firm did a presentation on balanced living and gave us a little business card to keep in our wallet. It has each “bank” in my life and every month or so I can go through and rate how I’m doing on each from 1-10. It’s a great way to see what banks are slipping and which ones are too full. In an increasingly hectic and busy world, I think it’s so important to do! Happy 2016 to you … want to make the trek back out to Rusted Roots soon!

    • I love that, Holly!! What a great way to keep track of where our lives are! I tell ya, if I don’t take time to purposefully keep things in check, something will inevitable fall beteween the cracks! I’m sure you can relate. I’m so glad that you popped over to say hello here on the blog and I sure hope to see you at Rusted Roots in 2016!!! Happy Spring!! 🙂

  4. Jamie Shearer says:

Girl….that ol Family bank was what needed concentration for both us Twisted Sisters this past year…NEVER take family for granted…in the end that is all there really is. Look forward to seeing you soon and getting our junk on again!

    • So so true, Jamie!! Family first ALWAYS!!! Sometimes we get so caught up in the “busy” that we forget that! It’s good to purposefully refocus every now and then!! So glad to see you gals back at it!! We’ll see you on the junkin’ trail!! Happy Spring!! 🙂

  5. I loved this post. I have been feeling the same thing over the last couple of months and finally decided to slow my roll. I’m much happier now 🙂 I think you can find a star stamp at just about any craft store, but you could also cut out your own from a piece of rubber and glue it to a little wood block…or how about a potato? lol.

    • Ha ha ha, Colleen!! A potato!!! I so remember making those in school!! That was fun! I had totally forgot about it. Lucky for me, a follower popped one in the mail for me and it was the perfect size!! I tell ya, we have the best readers!!! I’m glad you were able to slow down a bit and take a deep breath!! We all need that every now and then!! Keep in touch, girlfriend!!! Happy Spring!! 🙂

  6. I always love your posts and especially love this one…YES, take care of yourself and all that is important to you.
Recently I read this prayer on Facebook…I liked it so much that I printed it off and have it right where I can read it every morning…”I pray that you will seek God in every area of your life. I pray that you will keep a conversation going with Him all throughout the day. May you experience joy and peace as you draw near to Him.” Isn’t that just beautiful!!!!! (Sorry I do not know who to give credit to)
One of these days I hope to visit your shop…

    • Oh I love that, Brenda!! Such a great reminder on this ‘Good Friday’ and everyday! I’m so glad you shared! And yes, we so hope you can make it out to the shop one of these days! We would love to meet you!! In the mean time, keep in touch! It’s always a pleasure hearing from you!! Happy Easter! 🙂
